The Dollar Tree discount store that has long stood on Tuscaloosa's Skyland Boulevard is going to be demolished on Wednesday, and the old girl is going out with a party featuring complimentary coffee, donuts, and giveaways.

District 7 City Councilman Cassius Lanier said the building will be demolished to make way for "Project Encore," businessman Stan Pate's upcoming redevelopment of the once-proud McFarland Mall site. The Dollar Tree is the last structure left standing on the site, and the store closed recently after a replacement for it opened across the street.

As the store comes down, Lanier said he will be on-site with free coffee and donuts, and will give away 25 $100 gift cards to shop at the new Dollar Tree store now open on the other side of Skyland Boulevard.

Lanier said they will toast the property's past but celebrate its bright future when demolition begins Wednesday morning around 7:30 a.m.

"Tearing down Dollar Tree will be the last piece of the puzzle to launch the facelift to District 7 and the McFarland Mall property," Lanier told the Thread. "Stan Pate is a motivated developer who is anxious to bring top-tier businesses to Tuscaloosa, and that makes my job well worth it."

The fun is expected to begin at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the closed Dollar Tree at 900 Skyland Boulevard East.
