After much deliberation, the 2020 rendition of the Birmingham Christmas Village Festival was canceled on Monday afternoon.

According to a Facebook post by the Birmingham Christmas Festival, the promoters "have been trying for months to work with guidelines so that everyone would have a positive, healthy, and successful show." However, due to state guidelines that place a limit on the number of customers and booths at the event, the decision was made to cancel the event.

"We were hoping to start the Christmas Season off with joy and happiness," the Facebook post read. "This year has been a roller coaster, but we wanted so much to have a great Christmas Village. After months of planning and re-planning our hearts are broken to announce the Christmas Village Festival Birmingham must be cancelled."

According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, Jefferson County leads the state in positive coronavirus cases with over 13,000 all-time cases. The state added more than 3,000 new positive cases on Sunday, increasing the cumulative number of total confirmed infections to over 99,000.

Starting Aug. 14, the group said it would begin to disperse refunds to customers who mail their tickets back. If not, customers who retain their tickets will be able to attend the 2021 Birmingham Christmas Village Festival at no extra cost.
