AT&T users in the Buhl area of northwestern Tuscaloosa County will enjoy faster speeds and stronger signals after the service provider added a new cell tower there this week.

The tower was added to land owned by the Tuscaloosa County School System, and marks the parties' second collaboration - AT&T had previously added a tower to TCSS property in northern Tuscaloosa County.

Coverage along Old Boothtown Road will improve markedly, and the tower also adds Band 14 spectrum to the area. That's a special feed that can be used locally on FirstNet, which powers communications and connectivity for first responders and public safety organizations across the country.

"We look at Band 14 as public safety’s VIP lane, delivering truly dedicated connectivity when needed," AT&T said in a press release. "When not in use by FirstNet subscribers, AT&T customers can enjoy Band 14’s added coverage and capacity."

“Investments like this strengthen both our public safety and our economy,” said Sheriff Ron Abernathy. “When connectivity expands, we’re opening doors for families, students, and small businesses — while also making sure our emergency teams can always respond.”

TCSS Superintendent Keri Johnson said partnering with AT&T just made good sense, enhancing the lives and safety of these more rural residents.

“We are glad to be involved in helping expand connectivity across our Tuscaloosa County school communities,” Johnson said. “This supports communication and safety for our students and families.”

“We are continually working to help close the digital divide by expanding our networks and delivering ultra-fast internet that keeps residents, businesses and first responders connected,” said Terri Williams, regional director, external affairs, AT&T Alabama. “We are committed to investing in the modern, high-speed network infrastructure necessary in today’s economy.”

State Senator Gerald Allen also touted the collaboration and the expansion of stronger connectivity into Buhl.

"In the Legislature, we work every day to expand broadband investments across the state that will help individuals, families and businesses connect to the online tools they need to thrive in today’s digital world,” Allen said. “This network expansion in Buhl is an excellent example of how building a welcoming environment for private investment can help bring opportunities to all Alabamans.”
