The Tuscaloosa County School System is looking for bus drivers and will train the right candidates from the ground up — including covering the cost of earning a commercial driver's license.

TCSS provides all the training needed to earn a Class B CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements, as well as a State of Alabama School Bus Operator's Certificate. Training for bus aide positions is also available.

The school system said in a Tuesday announcement that the jobs come with health insurance, retirement benefits and the opportunity to pick up additional routes for more hours and pay. The schedule aligns with the school calendar, making the positions a workable fit alongside other jobs.

New driver training runs June 2 through June 29 at the Northport Bus Shop located at 3700 68th Avenue, with classes from 7:45 to 11:45 a.m. on the following dates:

  • June 2, 3 and 4
  • June 8, 9, 10 and 11
  • June 16, 17 and 18
  • June 22, 23, 24 and 25
  • June 29 (by appointment, for trainees needing additional hours before certification)

The state certification class follows July 6 through 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, also at the Northport Bus Shop. State examiner testing is projected for July 9 through 17, conducted individually by appointment.

Interested applicants can contact the TCSS Transportation Department at (205) 342-2636 or transportation@tcss.net, or visit tcss.net for more information.
