One lane of perhaps the most highly trafficked intersection in the city of Tuscaloosa was closed after a sinkhole appeared there Wednesday morning.

John McWilliams, the public information officer for the Alabama Department of Transportation's West Central Region, said the lefthand turn lane at 15th Street eastbound and McFarland Boulevard will remain closed until the sinkhole can be repaired.

He said no one was hurt and no vehicles were damaged when the small section of street collapsed and crews tentatively hope to finish repairs before the end of the day Wednesday.

"Fortunately it was just something we caught early," McWilliams said.

McWilliams emphasized, though, that the timeline for completing the fix and getting the lane back open is hardly set in stone.

"We just really won't know fully what we're working with until we're in there working on it," McWilliams said.

Motorists in the area should expect delays in the area or consider alternate routes.
