Mayor Maddox: University Boulevard East Road Project 75% Complete
The City of Tuscaloosa broke ground on the University Boulevard East Improvement Project on January 8th.
In his "Mayor's Minute" post today, Walt Maddox said the work is nearing completion.
"I’m happy to share that this $21 million Elevate Tuscaloosa investment, in partnership with Tuscaloosa Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, has now reached 75% completion," Maddox said.
"Streetscaping is beginning to take shape along the north side of the corridor, offering a first look at the enhanced design," the mayor added.

Besides the streetscaping, the project includes utility improvements between Arcadia Drive and Redmont Drive. It will also include amenities such as lighting, security, pedestrian paths and landscaping.
Approximately three-quarters of the new sidewalk has been installed on the south side of the construction area. The sidewalk improvement is a big deal to Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner, who spoke during the groundbreaking.
"This project is massive. Growing up here, I watched people for years walk in ditches, very dangerous conditions. This is one of the main reasons this project is being done. This is going to be something I've only dreamed about and now it's reality," Tyner said.
Due to the completion of major underground utility work, drivers in the area should experience significantly fewer traffic pattern changes going forward, the mayor said.
However, there will still be temporary road and intersection closures at times. The project is expected to be done in the first quarter of next year. The mayor says he is confident that goal will be met and on budget.
The project is a continuation of the effort by the city to revitalize Alberta in the aftermath of devastating damage done by the EF-4 tornado of April 27, 2011.
