Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, will be receiving a $105,000 grant from Alabama Power and its parent, Southern Company. This grant is to support dual enrollment expansion for Alabama Black Belt counties.

Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Stillman RaSheda Workman said that Stillman is “delighted to receive this generous grant from Alabama Power and Southern Company.” She also noted that “the coronavirus pandemic has shed new light on the technology disparities within our rural communities. With this grant, we can further enhance our technology capabilities and continue to educate the next generation of leaders.”

Earlier this year, the Southern Company and its subsidiaries’ announced a $50 million HBCU Initiative. This multiyear funding strategy “provides HBCU students with scholarships, internships, leadership development and access to technology and innovation to support career readiness,” noted the press release.

Stillman College will use the funds to assist the introduction of Alabama’s first early college-based distance learning program at an HBCU.  The initial stage of the new program will benefit 40 high school students. “Stillman has also received funding support from the US Department of Agriculture Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program to support the initiative.”

Currently, there is a dual enrollment agreement between Stillman College and Tuscaloosa City Schools. Stillman Start Academy will provide collegiate courses to students in neighboring rural counties of Sumter, Greene, and Hale. It will offer “STEM disciplines and career and life development resources, including entrepreneurship” through distance learning technology.

“Our hope is that this funding will draw further recognition to historically Black colleges and universities like Stillman College and deepen partnerships between business and civic leaders and these vital institutions,” said Mark Crews, Alabama Power Western Division Vice President.
