To no surprise of anyone who filled up on the way to work this morning, gas prices took another jump up overnight nationwide and in Alabama.

Today's Cost

A gallon of regular unleaded went up another 6¢ a gallon overnight to $3.82 on average nationwide. In Alabama it has increased by 4¢ since yesterday to $3.53. Tuscaloosa County gas prices are at $3.53 a gallon, matching the state price for the first time in months. Perry County continues to record the highest price in the state at $3.67.

For perspective, AAA Alabama notes the all-time gasoline price high in Alabama was an average of $4.63 which was recorded on June 14, 2022.

Driven primarily by severe supply disruptions following the outbreak of the war with Iran on Feb. 28, oil prices continue to climb. The international benchmark Brent crude is trading up to $108 dollars a barrel.

Geopolitical instability triggered by Iran blocking the heavily used oil transport waters of the Strait of Hormuz continues to couple with spring break demand increases and refinery shifts to higher-priced summer blends, to result in one of the largest four-week spikes in 30 years, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Other Impacts

Of great concern is the continued rising cost of diesel fuel which can eventually impact the cost of everything from retail sales to food costs. In Alabama a gallon of diesel is $5.64 a gallon. nationwide the average cost is $5.81 a gallon.

Consumers face higher grocery bills and restaurant prices as businesses pass on increased expenses, often resulting in simplified menus, reduced portion sizes, or shifts to cheaper, less nutritious food alternatives, according to the Economist.

Alabama's farmers, particularly in North Alabama, are feeling intense pressure due to high diesel costs, animal feed and fertilizer costs, which are threatening profit margins.

This month's report from the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources entitled Rising Fuel Costs Cause Food Prices to Skyrocket states, "According to the Producer Price Index, food prices rose 3.9 percent last month. This increase marks the steepest rise in food prices in 36 years. Like it or not, high gasoline prices make everything more expensive – it costs more to drive to work, more to operate a business and more to buy groceries."

Two Ways to Reduce Cost

AAA Alabama's Clay Ingram suggests two ways motorists can reduce their fuel bill.

  1. Reduce consumption by filling up only when necessary. If possible, work from home to reduce commuting fuel usage.
  2. Comparative shop. Ingram points out your favorite gas station station may not have the lost costs. Look for gas station with the best buys

You may have to practice smart fuel consumption for a while. The March report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Short-Term Energy Outlook is projecting retail gas prices will remain above $3.00 a gallon into next year, even if the Middle East Conflict is over by then.
