The Interstate 20/59 bridge over McFarland Boulevard will have its eastbound arch replaced, according to a Wednesday press release from the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The release states that the arch "does not pose any danger to the traveling public," but it does not meet ALDOT's building specifications.

"The arches are necessary, as they will hold the weight of the bridge over McFarland Boulevard and will allow the contractor to remove underneath supports," the press release read.

Construction of the bridge began in January 2018 and was expected to be completed by December 2020. However, factoring in the replacement of the eastbound arch and the addition of the westbound arch, ALDOT now expects to be finished with the project by summer 2021.
