Woman Accused of 2019 Shooting Attacks Jail Officer

A woman charged with attempted murder after a May 2019 shooting is facing a new assault charge after she allegedly attacked a detention officer at the Tuscaloosa County Jail Monday.

According to court documents filed Friday, 33-year-old Latoya Shardae Ward has been jailed since she reportedly fired several shots at another woman during a dispute over a man.

On Monday, two deputies were moving Ward from her cell block to a "disciplinary cage" after she "caused a disturbance" among other inmates.

According to the deposition, Ward "became irate and began attacking" one of the officers. She allegedly grabbed the guard by the hair, threw her to the floor and punched her in the face several times.

The guard's face was cut during the attack, one of her fingers was broken, she had deep bruising on her face, knees and elbows, her face and forehead were swollen and her eyeglasses were shattered. She was taken to an area emergency care center for treatment.

Ward was formally charged Thursday with second-degree assault, a Class C felony, in addition to the pre-existing charges of attempted murder and second-degree assault from 2019.
