Party Primary Runoff Preview: Voter Confusion & Fatigue
Tuesday's political party primaries runoff comes in the midst of political chaos that has created some confusion among voters. The genesis of the bulk of the problem is Washington D.C. Republicans are scrambling to retain control of congress amid a war and other international tensions, inflation, high gas prices, closing businesses, racial turmoil and a presidency that demands Republicans at the state level help.
With the U.S. Supreme Court's help, Republican officials in solidly red Alabama moved forward with a redrawn congressional map that eliminates one of the state's two Democratic-held U.S. House seats in time for this autumn's midterm elections, when the GOP will be defending its razor-thin congressional majority.

Redrawing congressional districts 1,2,6 and West Alabama's 7th will not only make 2nd District Democrat Congressman Shomari Figures re-election next to impossible, but it has also required Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen's office to hurriedly attempt to move voters into the correct district.
Adding to voter fatigue and confusion is an August Special Election just weeks after Tuesday's primary runoffs and before November's General Election. Four trips to the polls this year in those four congressional district and a couple of state senate districts are not only politically exhausting but have created confusion among some voters.
Fortunately, the runoff vote Tuesday and the special election in August will create only an inconvenience for some West Alabama voters. The state has returned to the 2023 map from the one drawn by the federal court in 2024. Only Congressional District 7, represented by Democrat Congresswoman Terri Sewell comes into play.
There will be no Congressional District 7 names from either party on Tuesday's runoff ballot. Those names will appear on the August 11th Republican Special Elections primary ballot: Ammie Akin and David Perry are the GOP candidates. On the Democratic side, only one candidate – incumbent Congresswoman. Terri Sewell – has qualified, so she will not appear on the Tuesday or the August 11 special primary ballot.
There are some critical statewide runoffs on the ballot Tuesday that should bring people to the polls. They are:
Statewide Runoffs:
- Republican runoff: Barry Moore and Jared Hudson
- Democratic runoff: Everett Wess and Dakarai Larriett
Lieutenant Governor (Republican runoff)
- John Wahl vs. Wes Allen
- Katherine Robertson vs. Jay Mitchell
- Corey Hill vs. Christina Woerner McInnis
- Candidates include Jim Zeigler and Chris Beeker
There are also some local runoffs in West Alabama, they include:
Fayette County:
Fayette County Revenue Commissioner
- (Republican) Carrie Edmundson vs Jeananne Edwards
Superintendent, Fayette County Board of Education
- (Republican) Jeremy Madden vs Steve Sawyer
Walker County:
Walker County Sheriff:
- (Republican) Jason Atkins vs J.C. Poe, Jr.
