VCU: Holt Man Was Killed in Front Daughter, Suspect Charged with Capital Murder
The victim of a deadly predawn shooting in Tuscaloosa County's Holt community Sunday was murdered in his own home, in front of his 10-year-old daughter, police said in an evening update.
Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said police were called around 1:45 on reports of a shooting in the 4600 Block of Virgina Drive in Holt - a community within Tuscaloosa County and Tuscaloosa Police jurisdiction.
Kennedy said one man had been shot multiple times during an altercation at his own residence. He was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center but did not survive. The victim was identified as Jakeria Rashaad May, age 35.
The VCU investigated the killing, interviewed witnesses and identified 30-year-old Terrelle Devonte Williams as a suspect.
Williams was found by local police and federal US Marshals later Sunday and arrested. Kennedy said Williams has been charged with capital murder and jailed without bond. The capital charge will see Williams remain in jail until the case is settled and if convicted, could face life in prison or the death penalty.
Kennedy said the enhancement from murder to capital murder arises from the fact that the victim was shot and killed in the presence of his 10-year-old daughter.
It was the sixth homicide investigated by the VCU so far in 2024.
