University of Alabama Sets New Enrollment Record, Closing on 40,000 Students
The University of Alabama is bigger than ever this year as its student enrollment numbers once again broke all-time records and drew ever closer to the 40,000 student milestone.
A spokesperson for the Capstone announced the new headcount Monday morning after an official census of the student population was completed recently.
According to UA, there are a record-breaking 39,623 students studying at Alabama in Fall 2023, a full 1,000 students more than 2022's enrollment of 38,645 .
UA said there are smaller metrics to celebrate in their big news, too. This class includes 3,184 freshmen from the state of Alabama, with students coming from all 67 counties. The University said it marks the largest number of in-state freshmen since 2010.
They also touted UA's 1,142 National Merit Scholars, the highest number in school history, which makes UA one of the nation’s largest homes for that group of academic overachievers. More than 40 percent of this freshman class boasts a 4.0 high school GPA, they said.
Alabama also said 2023 marks a record enrollment of 9,342 students who are ethnic or racial minorities including 4,579 Black students and 2,610 Hispanic students.
"Students – and their parents – are not only drawn to UA's academic excellence but to what we refer to as the ‘Alabama Experience,’" said UA President Stuart R. Bell. "With over 600 student organizations, experiential learning opportunities like our remarkable entrepreneurship program, and boundless undergraduate and graduate research opportunities, students choose The University of Alabama to become well-rounded global citizens, ready to make a difference."
Bell said UA is also focused on keeping the education it offers affordable, and froze in-state tuition for the 2023-2024 academic year, the sixth time in seven years that UA's Board of Trustees declined to raise tuition rates on in-state students.
