A bar on the Tuscaloosa Strip permanently closed this weekend after about four years in business, vacating the space that housed the infamous dive Egan's Bar for more than 40 years.

As the Thread previously reported, Egan's shut down in 2021 after 42 years on the Strip when its final owner, Mike McWhirter, sold it to other Tuscaloosa businessmen to open their own bar, which they named "Unique."

The new concept opened at 1229 University Boulevard after a summer of renovations that year and tried to capture the same kind of loyal regular customers, but on Saturday, the owners took to social media to say they would permanently close the bar.

"It is with heavy hearts we announce we are closing our doors permanently after today," the Facebook post read. "We want to thank all of those for the love and support over the last four years, it’s been an amazing ride!"
