Police in Tuscaloosa have identified the man who was shot to death at an apartment complex late Saturday night and announced the arrest of the suspect they believe is responsible.

Captain Marty Sellers, the co-commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said officers were called to Creekwood Village Apartments at 1750 40th Avenue just past Stillman College in West Tuscaloosa on reports of a shooting at around 11:15 p.m. Saturday.

Sellers said officers found the victim, 22-year-old Marquise Scott, inside an apartment, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

The VCU began an investigation, collected evidence and interviewed both witnesses to the crime and a suspect.

Ultimately, the VCU arrested 25-year-old Lagabriel Jones and charged him with murder.  Jones has been booked and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond pursuant to Aniah’s Law.

Sellers said Scott and Jones were acquaintances who have had problems with one another in the past, and that may have motivated the killing.

It is the first homicide the VCU has investigated in 2025 after a record-breaking number in 2024.
