Five hard-working police dogs in Tuscaloosa will be fitted with new armored vests thanks to a nonprofit dedicated to keeping canines like them safe.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department announced the gift on social media on Monday, saying that Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. will provide body armor for their dogs Baki, Leo, Meri, Nailz and Thomas.

The nonprofit was founded in 2009 and provides vests designed to protect animals from gunshots and sharp objects.TPD said the group has donated more than 6,200 vests to agencies across the United States, supported at times by private and corporate donations.

These five-pound vests cost over $1,000 to sponsor.

Vested Interest in K9s will provide new vests to adult working canines without one, or replace expired equipment to ensure peak protection doesn't lapse.
