A Tuscaloosa man was arrested Tuesday and charged with eight crimes related to child pornography, investigators have announced.

Captain Phil Simpson, the commander of the multi-agency West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force said the arrest follows an investigation by task force members as well as several outside agencies that assisted in the case.

The suspect, 44-year-old Phillip Shannon Wright, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of dissemination of obscene matter containing visual depiction of persons under 17 involved in obscene acts and seven counts of possession of obscene matter containing visual depiction of persons under 17 involved in obscene acts.

Simpson said the investigation into Wright began in February and involved the Internet
Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Tuscaloosa Police Department's Cyber Intelligence Unit and the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

Wright was booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail Tuesday, where his bond set at $135,000.

Like the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force, the WAHTTF is made up of investigators from multiple local law enforcement agencies who work together to transcend typical jurisdictional boundaries and address the most serious crimes facing the Tuscaloosa area.
