The Brookwood community and local law enforcement officers are mourning the Tuesday death of a school resource officer who passed away after a medical emergency on campus.

A spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Tim Johns, who was 62, was working at Brookwood High when something happened to him. A large response team of police and EMTs rushed to campus and tried to render aid, but Johns did not survive.

TCSO said Johns was employed with the sheriff’s office for 26 years and was a cherished member of the Brookwood High School community and was recently the grand marshal of their homecoming parade.

"He will be greatly missed by many to include his co-workers, school staff and students at Brookwood High School," TCSO said in a statement. "The Tuscaloosa County’s Sheriff’s Office lost a beloved co-worker and friend. We will remember him for his candidness, great sense of humor and dedication to the community. Our deepest condolences are extended to the family members of Deputy Tim Johns."

The school issued a statement about his passing and said counselors will be available to help students process this death as well as an unrelated student death this week.

"We are extremely saddened to let you know that we lost a dear member of our school community this afternoon, Deputy Tim Johns. Deputy Johns served our Brookwood area schools as our School Resource Officer. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Deputy Johns' family, loved ones, and all members of our school community who knew him," their statement said.

"Tomorrow and beyond, our district support team of counselors and social workers will be available to our students, faculty, and staff. Families, please encourage your students to reach out for support. We are here for them. This will be a difficult time for our faculty and staff members, as well, and we will have support in place for them,: they continued. "We love our students, faculty, and staff dearly. We want to make sure you are all cared for and that we support each other, as we grieve someone who meant so much to our schools."
