Seven of the 11 men taken into custody were from the Tennessee Valley area of North Alabama, three of them listed Mexico as their home with Tavarez the only one booked who was from south of Cullman.

Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin said, "Operation Summer Heat" was preceded in February 2024 by "The Millstone Project" that resulted in the arrests of around 50 people over the past two years on charges of child sex exploitation.

Authorities say all the suspects are being held in the Limestone County Detention Facility near Athens. They face further legal action pending an Aniah’s Law hearing before a judge.

The immigration status of the three men who listed Mexico as their home is not known at this time. However, the Limestone Detention Facility is being used by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Service to house detainees in the Trump Administration's ongoing illegal immigrant deportation operation.

.According to ALEA, child exploitation is a growing problem in the state due to easy access to online technology and interstate corridors.

The West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force, the state's only full-time task force, operates in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas, averaging 75 to 100 such arrests per year.
