Residents of three apartment buildings at a complex in Tuscaloosa have been told to leave their homes over raw sewage contamination and possible mold issues, a city spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

The problems are at Forrester Gardens, which is on James I Harrison Parkway in Tuscaloosa near Bowers Park.

A city spokesperson said all units in the 500 building of the complex have been declared uninhabitable by city staff, meaning no one can live or sleep there, but the conditions are not so hazardous as to prevent residents from retrieving their belongings.

The problems, which the city said were related to raw sewage and possible mold, have also affected eight units in the 400 building and four units in the 200 building, according to the city.

The apartment complex's owners will be required to relocate the tenants of all affected units by Tuesday night, and then remediate the issues that have made the apartments uninhabitable.

The city representative noted that this is different from a condemnation, which could lead to demolition - at this time, the units are considered repairable.
