Community members will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the Tuscaloosa Police Department by participating in the Citizen's Academy, which will begin in early 2023.

According to a post on TPD's Facebook account, applications are currently being accepted for classes, which will take place in February and March.

Through the program, participants will learn first-hand about the department's operations, including a ride-along with TPD patrol officers, spending a day at TPD's shooting range, collecting evidence and conducting a mock homicide investigation using technology used by forensic sciences investigators.

Participants will also use the virtual reality training simulator to give citizens an idea of what officers at the department do each day.

The classes will be offered in the evening, with dinner provided during each class to those enrolled. Participants must be at least 21 years old and will be required to undergo a criminal background check in order to qualify.

To apply for the program, click here, or contact Briana Freeman by phone at 205-248-4831 or by email at briana.freeman@tuscaloosa.com.
