President Trump delivered a strong, defiant and polarizing State of the Union Address to a joint session of congress last night. To no surprise, reaction to the longest such presidential address in history is divided along Alabama political party lines.

Trump emphasized immigration, foreign policy, attempted to convince wary Americans that the economy is stronger than many believe, championed tariffs, and chided supreme court justices for rulings against him.

Alabama Republican Reaction

Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville posted on Facebook that Trump is the hardest working president ever and has produced amazing accomplishments. "Now, we have HUGE tax cuts, a secure border, MAHA, an economy on the rise, manufacturing coming home, and our armed forces once again focused on LETHALITY."

Junior Republican Senator Katie Britt told Hannity on Fox, that Trump forced Democrats to reveal their true priority when he said the government should prioritize American Citizens and not illegal immigrants. "It was overwhelming that the Democrats chose to sit down, saying their duty was not to the American people but rather to illegal aliens." She called the speech the strongest by a president in modern history.

In the house, West Alabama GOP Congressman Robert Aderholt wrote that the address was strong and inspiring. "Under President Trump’s leadership, we are restoring peace through strength, defending our border, growing American manufacturing, and putting American families first. I stand beside the President in full support and will continue to deliver on his agenda and deliver real results for the American people."

Gov. Ivey posted her reaction on X (formerly Twitter): "POTUS delivered a strong, patriotic, optimistic and America First state of the union tonight. As we look towards our nation’s 250th this summer, we can be proud about where we are going."

Alabama Democrat Reaction

Neither of the Alabama Congressional Delegation's two Democrat members participated in their party's boycott of Trump's address. Neither had positive reactions to what he had to say.

West Alabama Democrat Congresswoman Terri Sewell wrote on Instagram, "No amount of lies or insults from this president can distract from his record of broken promises. The reality is that life in American is more expensive than ever, every day Americans are struggling to make ends meet.

Freshman Southeast Alabama Democrat Congressman Shomari Figures defended his attendance instead of participating in the boycott. “This is one of the few opportunities where we get the literal chance to look into the face of this administration at the highest level and hear what they have to say about the status that America is currently in,” Figures told Alabama Daily News.

Figures had hope Trump would announce a rollback of tariffs but was disappointed by what Trump had to say.

Unifying Moments

Politicians from both sides of the isle were unified in their support for the U.S. Men's Hockey Team that stood in the balcony of the house chamber in their jersey's and wearing their gold medals. The members also applauded when medals were awarded to two military pilots, an Olympic athlete, a Coast Guard petty officer and two National Guard members.
