A veteran city councilwoman in Tuscaloosa announced plans Wednesday morning to run for re-election and seek a third term in office.

Raevan Howard unseated the "Mailman" Harrison Taylor in 2017 after he spent more than two decades on the council and retained the seat after three people challenged her for the office in 2021.

On Wednesday, Howard told the Thread she will run again as voters in Tuscaloosa return to the polls for municipal elections on Tuesday, March 4th - just four months from now.

"I have served 8 productive years as Councilmember, and I believe I still have more to accomplish for District 2," Howard wrote in her announcement. "To name a few of my accomplishments, the removal of Liberty Recycling from District 2 was a main concern for myself, my community and individuals who lived closest to the business. This business was a nuisance to my community for over 20 years through loud noise and other disturbances. As Council Representative for the District, I fought hard alongside community members to prove that this business did not belong in my community. In December of 2021, the victory was won, and Liberty Recycling was removed from District 2."

Howard also celebrated work to fund, plan and begin the construction of a new $10 million Benjamin Barnes YMCA in the West End.

"The overall quality of life for my District has continued to be the most vital issue for me to address as Representative," Howard said. "Therefore, the revitalization of one of the oldest parks in Tuscaloosa,  Kaulton Park, was important for me to accomplish. I fought hard to receive 1.8 million dollars to increase the quality of life for hundreds of families that live in the Kaulton Park area. These renovations include lighting and security upgrades and amenities that every community deserves to enjoy."

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt has also announced he is seeking re-election, although most, if not all, incumbents on the council are also considering it and will likely run again.
