Possible Freeze in the Northern Half of Alabama on Friday

I hope you didn’t pack away those coats. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a “freeze is possible Friday morning for the northern half of Central Alabama. This means that the surface air temperature may be expected to be 32°F or below over a widespread area for a length of time.

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist gave us a heads up on Facebook that “temperatures will drop below freezing Friday morning over the northern and central counties of Alabama. We project a low in the 27-32 degree range for most places. For colder pockets, temperatures could be below freezing for over 6 hours late Thursday night and early Friday morning. This is not unusual for early April... in fact, long time readers know my advice every year. Don't plant anything that will be harmed by a freeze until April 15.”

To help in Spring planting, consulting the Old Farmer’s Almanac for our frost date is helpful. It is the “average date of the last light freeze in spring or the first light freeze in fall.” According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac and the frost dates, we will have 222 growing season dates, the last spring frost is March 29^th, and the first fall frost is November 7^th.
