Tuscaloosa Police Officer OK After Fiery Crash During Friday Afternoon Chase
A Tuscaloosa police officer is recovering after a fiery crash into a power pole Friday afternoon during a pursuit that wound for miles through city streets, police said.
The chase started with a 4:10 p.m. with a call that a Buick Enclave reported stolen in June was heading north on Greensboro Avenue, according to Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department.
Officers tried to stop the SUV at Greensboro Avenue and James I. Harrison Jr. Parkway, Taylor said, but the driver did not pull over.
From there, the pursuit moved onto Hargrove Road, 12th Avenue, Hackberry Lane, Prince Avenue and McFarland Boulevard before returning to Hargrove Road, Taylor said. It continued onto Kicker Road, Loop Road and East University Boulevard, then to Crescent Ridge Road and Virginia Drive.
Taylor said a Tuscaloosa Police vehicle struck a utility pole in front of a home on Virginia Drive and caught fire, Taylor said.
Another vehicle also crashed near the area, but it was not immediately clear if it was the Enclave being pursued or if the suspect who fled is in custody.
Because TPD officers were involved, the Northport Police Department is handling the investigation.
