Pickens County Schools Expected To Name New Superintendent Tuesday

School buses are already running in Pickens County, but it will be at least this coming Tuesday night before the school system knows who the next full-time school superintendent will be.

Currently, former Gordo High School principal Jeff Campbell has been serving as the interim superintendent since July. He took the temporary post after the previous superintendent, Shawn McDaniel, departed to assume the position of Dean of Instruction at Bevill State Community College.

McDaniel had been superintendent since being elected in 2024, with his resignation becoming effective on July 31st. That placed a time crunch on the Pickens County School Board to find a replacement before the system gets too deep into the new school year.

During their search for McDaniel's replacement, the school board members emphasized they were "...focused on ensuring continuity in district leadership as the transition process begins," according to a press statement.

No information about who the potential candidate might be, but the Pickens County Board of Education has stated it plans to name the next district superintendent at its meeting in Carrollton on Tuesday, at 6 p.m.

The person appointed to the position will complete McDaniel's unexpired term that ends in 2028. At that time, that person will need to decide whether to continue by becoming a candidate for election to the office.
