Leaders in Northport say they're less than six months away from the grand opening of River Run Park, their signature sports complex under development on the banks of the Black Warrior, and they're projecting it will have a major economic impact.

As the Thread has extensively reported, River Run Park is a core feature of the city's broader 300-acre Northport Shore recreation development of previously undeveloped land between Kentuck Park and the northern riverbank.

The $27 million River Run Park will feature nine total ball fields for baseball and softball games, including a "signature" field for each sport that boasts 150 grandstand seats and bleachers to fit 400 more spectators. Those will be able to accommodate play up to the collegiate level, city leaders said.

In a Wednesday night press release, the city said they also plan to install volleyball, pickleball and basketball courts at Northport Shore as development there continues.

A city spokesperson said they have set River Run Park's grand opening date for August 16th, 2025. In the release, they said their analysts project 530,000 park visitors each year, generating an estimated $68 million in revenue.

“This isn’t just about building fields and courts, it is about creating a place where our
community comes together, where our kids can grow and where everyone in Northport can be proud to call their own,” Northport City Council President Christy Bobo said in the announcement.
