Moundville Archaeological Park to Host 4th Annual 5K
The University of Alabama's Moundville Archaeological Park will host its 4th annual 5K Footrace on Nov. 6 as a part of Native American Heritage Month.
Last year, the event was held virtually, but it is back as an in-person event this year. The event is open to people of all ages to run or walk, and the race is a Tuscaloosa Track Club Grand Prix Event.
"It's a fairly easy and unique route to run or walk," said Lindsey Gordon, education outreach coordinator at Moundville Archaeological Park. "Visitors are able to take in the magnificent architecture of the mounds and hopefully give reverence to those who built them."
All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Moundville Education Fund and support its goal to celebrate southeastern Native American culture.
Whether participants decide to run or walk the trail, UA says that they will be able to explore an "ancient site" of Native American history.
"Running or walking at Moundville Archaeological Park provides everyone with a unique experience to explore an ancient site that was once the site of a powerful prehistoric community that, at its peak, was America's largest city north of Mexico," the university said in a press release.
The entry fee for the 5K race is $25. In addition, all racers will receive a t-shirt, free park admission, a race bib, a Native American music playlist and a downloadable finishers certificate.
Those who want to participate can register online at the Moundville Archaeological Park's website. Badge pick-up is at 8:30 a.m., and the race starts at 9 a.m.
