The first half of the new year will bring lane closures and traffic delays to Interstate 20/59 in Tuscaloosa, the Alabama Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

John McWilliams, an ALDOT spokesperson for West Alabama, said they plan to repair more than a dozen bridge decks and install new guardrails at various locations on the westbound interstate lanes in Tuscaloosa County.

"Lane closures are expected to begin Monday, Jan. 6 and will continue until summer 2025, weather permitting," McWilliams said. "The contractor must keep at least one lane open at all times and is not allowed to have more than a two-mile lane closure."

ALDOT said the work will be done by Comanche Construction, who won the project with a $4.5 million bid.

McWilliams said the same team very nearly completed a similar project on the eastbound side of the interstate in 2024. and will spend about two weeks finishing that work in addition to the months of labor on the westbound side.

Motorists should expect possible delays and are encouraged to observe work-zone speed limits, ALDOT said.
