Unexpected Million Dollar Gift Moves Tuscaloosa Academy’s Athletic Facility Closer to Reality
An unexpected gift from a Tuscaloosa-based philanthropist will significantly advance a private school's mission to build a state-of-the-art athletic complex.
According to a news release from Tuscaloosa Academy, businessman Ric Mayers and his wife, Chloé, have donated $1 million to their Building Excellence Capital Campaign, which aims to fund a new 23,000-square-foot athletic center, designed by Tuscaloosa's Ward Scott Morris.
TA is a Pre-K through 12th-grade college preparatory school on Rice Valley Road in Tuscaloosa/

The total cost of the project is estimated at $7 million, and the gift from the Mayers, who were not previously affiliated with the school, pushes the campaign past 70 percent of its goal.
Mayers is a real estate developer who owns Midstates Petroleum Company as well as the new Two Dimes country music club on the Tuscaloosa Strip. The couple also has a newborn son who arrived in June, with a second child due next summer. The gift announcement said they plan to send both children to study at the school when they come of age.
After learning of TA and their mission, the Mayers committed to giving a million dollars to the capital campaign for the athletic center.
“This project isn’t just about Tuscaloosa Academy—it’s about Tuscaloosa,” said Ric Mayers. “Strong schools make strong communities. This Athletic Center will inspire pride, opportunity, and connection for generations to come.”
"Chloé and Ric’s generosity is a powerful reminder that our story extends beyond our campus,” said Beckie Share, Head of School. “Their belief in investing in kids has elevated our campaign in a truly remarkable way. Their gift reflects the broader community’s confidence in the value of independent education in Tuscaloosa.”
TA said the campaign has received 170 total gifts, including from every one of their employees.
“We were moved by the school’s commitment to excellence and its vision for the future,” said Chole and Ric Mayers. “We believe in supporting places that make a lasting difference for kids and families, and we are proud to be part of Tuscaloosa Academy’s next chapter.”
The school's announcement said Tuscaloosa Academy extends heartfelt gratitude to the Mayers family and to all donors who have given to the campaign.
"As the school continues toward its goal, this story serves as a reminder that support can come from the most unexpected places—and that every gift, large or small, moves the mission forward," they wrote.
