Ludie Levern Smelley (April 19th, 1938 – June 3rd, 2024)
Ludie Levern Smelley, age 86 of Moundville, passed away June 3, 2024 at DCH Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 11:00 am with Rev. John Russell officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at New Hope Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Sarah T. Smelley, parents; Stephen and Lillian Smelley, brother; Curtis Smelley and sister; Charlsey "Tot" Tubbs and brother-in-law; Richard Tubbs.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend Faye Whitfield.
He enlisted in the US Navy in 1958 and was Honorably Discharged in 1962 after serving 4 years. During his time served, one of his proudest moments was aboard the USS Runner Submarine where he learned his electrical skills. After the Navy, he returned home and went to work for the Corp of Engineers where he retired after more than 27 years of Federal Service. During these last few years, you could always find him driving around and visiting with family and friends. At each visit he always said he was "just bumming around."
Pallbearers will be Steve Smelley, Charlie Tubbs, Allen Tubbs, Randall Tubbs, Bill Whitley, Brian Whitley and Scott Tidmore. Honorary pallbearers are Terry Tubbs, Robbie Hoggle, Tommy Madison, and Jonica Pate.
