Familiar Mexican Restaurant to Replace Don Toño’s in Downtown Tuscaloosa

A Mexican restaurant that already boasts two popular restaurants in the area is preparing to open a third, this time in downtown Tuscaloosa's Temerson Square.

As the Thread previously reported, Don Toño's closed last summer after 13 years as an unsung anchor of the district, which predominantly houses restaurants and bars.

Now Los Tarascos, a familiar name to most longtime residents of the area, will soon open in Don Tono's former home at 2312 4th Street.

The move comes as Los Tarascos celebrates 25 years here - they opened their first restaurant in Tuscaloosa on Skyland Boulevard in 1999.

Since opening, the restaurants have been owned, managed and predominantly staffed by Omar Garcia and his family, who migrated to Tuscaloosa from Mexico in the 1980s and 90s.

Their first restaurant closed to make way for a new, 5,000-square-foot building on Skyland that opened in 2017 and still houses the restaurant.

The brand has also had several homes in Northport and moved into a new building on Highway 43 just past the Civic Center in April 2022.

Earlier this week, the administrative committee of the Tuscaloosa City Council recommended granting a liquor license for the new downtown location - the full seven-member council will vote on the matter during a public hearing this coming Tuesday.
