Police in Tuscaloosa have arrested a juvenile suspect and charged him with murdering an 18-year-old who identified as a woman Monday afternoon, allegedly over comments made on social media.

As the Thread previously reported, officers responded to a residence on East 35th Avenue in Tuscaloosa Monday around 1 p.m. on reports of a shooting.

Police said a woman there had been fatally shot and said signs pointed to a homicide, and they later determined the killing happened late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

In a Wednesday update, Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said investigators have put the case together and identified and arrested a suspect.

Kennedy said the victim was 18-year-old Cameron Jamal Mikquise Thompson, who identified as a woman.

Police believe Thompson posted comments on social media regarding the suspect's sexual orientation and that may have motivated this deadly confrontation.

The suspect, a juvenile, allegedly shot Thompson several times and they died on the scene and were eventually discovered Monday afternoon.

Kennedy said the suspect will be charged with murder as an adult, but the VCU is legally prohibited from releasing information about suspects who are under the age of 18.

Thompson's murder was the 20th homicide the VCU investigated in Tuscaloosa city limits this year - an all-time record.
