West, Central Alabama Be Prepared for 2 Rounds of Severe Weather
We are currently monitoring a storm system that move across Alabama today into this evening. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, “showers and thunderstorms will increase from the southwest through the day with some severe storms.”
We have 2 rounds of potential severe weather. Our Townsquare Media coverage timing for strong storms is between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and then for northwest Alabama from 7 p.m. until Midnight.
“The severe weather risk remains greater across our southeast counties and extends further south to the Gulf Coast. Showers with some storms are expected across the northwest counties tonight and a few severe storms may develop with this activity as well,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that the “SPC maintains a "slight risk" (level 2/5) of severe thunderstorms today south of a line from Grove Hill to Fort Deposit to Phenix City. A "marginal risk" (level 1/5) covers the rest of the state.”
Threats for Today
Spann said that “the core threat of strong to severe thunderstorms will come this morning into the early afternoon hours across the southern quarter of Alabama. The main threats will come from hail and strong winds, although an isolated tornado can't be ruled out.”
Threats for Tonight
For the evening timeframe, there is the possibility of active weather in the northern half of Alabama.
There is the potential for those storms to become “strong with gusty winds and small hail. But, the overall severe risk will be low as the organized shear in the atmosphere will be east of here by then,” said Spann.
Watching the Severe Weather Chance for Saturday
As of right now, this is more contained for the southern counties of Central Alabama on Saturday between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. with severe storms capable of producing a brief tornado, damaging winds to 60 mph, and hail up to quarter size hail. This is a developing weather situation and will bring you updates if it turns out to impact our coverage area.
