Tuscaloosa Principal Preeti Nichani Honored with National Award

October is National Principals Month, an opportunity to celebrate the vital role school principals play in student achievement.

Northridge Middle School Principal Dr. Preeti Nichani was one of 39 school leaders nationwide honored with the 2026 NAESP National Distinguished Principal (NDP) award by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), which she earned while serving as the Principal at Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools-Elementary.

“Principals are the driving force behind thriving school communities,” said NAESP Executive Director Stephanie Morris. “The NAESP National Distinguished Principal program recognizes leaders who not only inspire academic achievement but also foster inclusive cultures, support educators, build strong community partnerships, and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. We are proud to honor these remarkable educators and celebrate their contributions to the profession.”

The honorees traveled to Washington, D.C., October 15-16, for two days of events celebrating their leadership and achievements. The program concluded with an awards banquet at The Willard InterContinental.

“Honorees are selected through a rigorous process led by NAESP state affiliates and appointed selection committees, recognizing principals who exemplify excellence in educational leadership,” the press release said.

Through this initiative, the program recognizes how principals help drive student success, foster positive school culture, strengthen teacher effectiveness, and cultivate meaningful partnerships with families and communities.
