Red Flag Warning Issued for Alabama: Elevated Fire Risk Today
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has a “Red Flag Warning” in effect until Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. due to the combination of very low humidity, dry conditions, and gusty winds.
This warning impacts West Alabama, where residents are urged to recognize the elevated fire danger today and take the alert seriously.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly.
What to Expect
- Wind Gusts up to 35 mph
- Northeast winds from 10 to 15 mph
- Relative Humidity as low as 18%
What to Avoid
- Avoid open flames or sparks
- Keep vehicles off dry grass
- Properly discard cigarettes

Thoughts from the Alabama Forestry Commission
To put this in perspective, the Alabama Forestry Commission has ranked the state's quadrants by fire risk.
Northwest: Very High
Northeast: High
Southwest: Extreme
Southeast: Very High
As reported by the Townsquare Media Weather Center earlier this week, the Alabama Forestry Commission said that “in the last seven days, 147 wildfires have burned approximately 5,600 acres of forestland across the state.”
