Soon, Alabama’s landscape will be filled with vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, the colors that indicate that Fall has truly arrived.

As your resident weather nerd, I must mention that weather plays a role in when fall’s colors arrive and how vibrant they will be each year. While the Smoky Mountains guide helps determine the fall foliage timeline, it’s not exact, so keep that in mind.

According to The Weather Channel, the main drivers of leaves changing color are due to the following:

  • Shorter days and longer nights.
  • The green pigment in leaves relies on sunlight, so less sunlight means the pigment starts to break down. This allows the other pigments that were always there to have a chance to shine through.
  • For the best fall colors, temperature and moisture also play a role. Warm, sunny days followed by cool fall nights help maximize the color.
