Once September arrives, people often refer to the upcoming time period as the “-ber months” for September, October, November, and December. It’s also the countdown to the holiday season.

Forecasting the winter season in the southern region can be tricky. Even though some Alabamians dream of a winter wonderland around the holidays, most often the issues for our area come with sleet and ice, but we can certainly hope for the pretty postcard snow scenes.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac said that the overall winter forecast is “mostly mild with pockets of wild.” This means that most of the United States is likely to see a normal or somewhat milder winter, though certain areas should prepare for noticeably colder conditions.

Deep South Winter Old Farmer’s Almanac Predictions

For the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Deep South region encompasses Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, as well as a portion of the Florida Panhandle and the northwest corner of Georgia. The Southeast region encompasses the majority of Georgia, South Carolina, and a significant portion of North Carolina.

Alabamians should be prepared for a “warmer-than-average winter with chilly snaps and some northern snow,” said Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Coldest Period

The coldest period for the Deep South region will be from mid-December to early January and late January to early February.

Precipitation Chance

Additionally, residents across the Deep South states may experience a below-normal chance of precipitation.

Chances for Snow?

Old Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting the snow chance to be “below normal.” At the same time, the best chances are pinpointed to the northern section of the deep south in mid-November. Plus, there are snow chances in late January and early February.

If Mother Nature is reading this, as much as I’m dreaming of a snowy West Alabama winter, our wish is for an ice-free season.
