Alabama OC Talks Wide Receiver Depth Ahead of Third Saturday in October
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-- Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb spoke with the media this morning following Alabama's 20-17 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. During the game, star WR Ryan Coleman-Williams suffered both a knee and head injury in Saturday, Alabama HC Kalen DeBoer Said today in his press conference that Coleman-Williams is expected to not play this weekend against the Tennessee Volunteers.
When asked this morning about the depth at receiver with Coleman-Williams expected not to play, Grubb stated that “But from there, we’ve got a group of really competitive players. Noah's really progressing. We think he's really pretty close to 100% now. And Derek Meadows is showing up; he made a nice play at the end of the game there, obviously. So we're lucky to have that many guys. Cederian[Morgan] does a great job backing up the Lottie[Brooks], and has shown up in a couple different scenarios. So we got guys that are fighting for reps and ready to go. You look at a guy like Rico[Scott] and where he was at last year at this time, and how he's starting to step up into his role."
Coleman-Williams is the Tide's leading receiver with 23 catches for 415 yards and four touchdowns on the season. The Tide's next up is Lotzier Brooks with 23 catches for 389 yards and just one touchdown on the season. WR Rico Scott has also been a staple in the offense, bringing in 18 catches for 224 yards and three scores. Freshman wideout Cederian Morgan also has a touchdown on the season as the Tide will look for the next man up.
Grubb also spoke to the toughness on the team with TE Josh Ford playing after having surgery for a broken arm he suffered during the Crimson Tide's 56-23 win at Mississippi State. “Yeah, they're fighting for reps to get on the field. You know, and Ryan has been battling through some stuff. I’ll let coach DeBoer talk more about that. But you talk about Josh Ford and Ryan Coleman-Williams, the toughness that those guys have shown has been unbelievable."
Alabama will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, this Saturday to take on the Volunteers at 3:30 pm EST on ABC.
