The Russells, Keelon and Kierston, had recently graduated from Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas, and both had enrolled at the University of Alabama. Keelon enrolled in January after signing with Alabama in December 2024, while Kierston had arrived on campus over the Summer.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, which investigates all deaths outside of a hospital setting in Tuscaloosa County, released a statement on Thursday, saying the investigation into Kierston's death is ongoing, but appears to be "non-criminal in nature". No other information has been provided at this time.

April Moore, the mother of Keelon and Kierston Russell, released a statement on Friday evening regarding the passing of her daughter, and Keelon's twin.

"As a family, we are absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude at the outpouring of thoughts, prayers, and messages we have received from family, friends, the University of Alabama, Duncanville High School, and people all across the country this week," Moore wrote on social media.

Moore also called Kiersten an angel from God, mentioning how she was a light to everyone she met.
