According to Sports Illustrated, Nate Oats and the Alabama basketball program are set to make the first of three assistant coach hires they need to make this offseason. The Tide are prepared to Hire Austin Claunch, the current head coach at Nicholls State.

Claunch is a 33-year-old Argentinian who played at Emory until 2012. From there, he became the director of player development at George Mason, where he stayed for one year before going to Clemson as a graduate assistant. In 2016, Nicholls State hired him as an assistant. Nicholls State made him the head coach in 2018.

Under Claunch, Nicholls State has gone 90-60 and made an appearance in the 2022 NIT, where they were bounced in the first round.
