Iconic Moon Winx Lodge Closed by the City of Tuscaloosa
The iconic Moon Winx Lodge has been closed by the City of Tuscaloosa for breaking various health code violations. The notable location can be found at 3410 University Blvd E, Tuscaloosa with a sign that is forever a part of our Tuscaloosa heritage.
This historic location and a familiar crescent moon sign has been part of our Alabama culture since the 1920s known as the Moon Winx Motor Court then renamed to the Moon Winx Lodge. The “motel proved to be quite a popular stop for football fans throughout the 1950s and 1960s as they headed for Tuscaloosa,” said Stuckey’s.
Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner - after confirming the closure on Facebook - shared some memories from his childhood in the 60s.
“Coach Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant would bus the team to eat a steak dinner at the Lamplighter - spend the night at the Moon Winx to avoid any distractions on campus the night before a home game," he wrote, "Then bus the football team back for the always 1:30 kickoff. We had over 40 kids in Durrett Grove and we would stand along the banks of University Boulevard - and scream Roll Tide and shake our shakers as the team passed by," said Tyner.
This is a developing story and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
