The veteran homeless rates in the United States are typically higher on average each year compared with the rates for nonveterans, but the good news is the mean rates are decreasing each year for both groups. (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development data).

Veteran homelessness decreased 8% from 2023 to 2024 according to "The 2024 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report (AHAR) to Congress."

Much of the credit for continued reduced veteran homelessness in 2025 goes to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA announced today that it is permanently housing 51,936 homeless veterans as of this year. That includes 87 previously homeless vets currently being housed at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center on Loop Road.

In 2024, 5% to 7% of the veterans in Alabama were unsheltered homeless as identified in the housing and urban development study. That accounted for 291 vets in the state. The sheltering operation at the Tuscaloosa VA has reduced that number to 204.

"This is life-changing and in many cases, life-saving work," Va Medical Center Tuscaloosa Interim Director Oladipo Kukoyi was quoted as saying in the agency's press release. "We are proud of the progress Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center is making to get veterans off the streets and are redoubling our efforts to continue this momentum moving forward."
