A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in west Tuscaloosa early Monday morning and police are searching for the driver involved, who reportedly left the scene.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said dispatchers got a call at about 1:15 a.m. to report someone lying in the roadway on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near Short 16th Street in west Tuscaloosa.

Taylor said the victim, a woman, was dead when TPD officers arrived to the scene.

"Officers believe she was struck ny a vehicle and are requesting any potential witnesses to call 205-349-2121 or submit a tip anonymously on our app," Taylor said.

No other details were immediately available on Monday morning, and the victim's identity has not yet been publicly released.

TPD's traffic homicide unit is investigating the fatality.
