The joys of Christmas past will return to Northport next Tuesday when the holiday favorite Dickens Downtown takes over the intersection of 5th Street and Main Avenue.

Each year, period actors in costume take to downtown Northport to spread holiday cheer straight from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The family fun event returns next Tuesday, December 2nd, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Victorian celebration will fill the air with artificial snow and the sounds of carolers and performers. Many will be in costume, and visitors are also invited to dress up.

The festivities start with a Grand Entrance procession along Main Avenue, leading to Historic Shirley Place, where a tree-lighting ceremony is planned for 5:30 p.m.

Father Christmas and Queen Victoria will be on the scene for pictures with families, and intricate model trains from the Black Warrior Model Railroad Club will be set up inside First Methodist Church Northport.

Horse-drawn carriages will offer free rides during the event, and a live nativity scene will feature a camel, donkey, goat and more.

There will also be food and gifts available from the area's host of local restaurants and stores.

Parking, which has always been tricky for the event in historic downtown Northport, will be offered this year at the County's Synergic Center as well as near Kentuck Park.

The Friends of Historic Northport will present Dickens Downtown next Tuesday, December 2nd, from 5 p.m. to 8:30.
