Higdon Bound for Northport City Council After Incumbent Doesn’t Seek Seat
A local financial expert appears set to cruise to a seat on the Northport City Council after no one else qualified to seek it.
The deadline to register came and went at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and neither incumbent Anwar Aiken nor any other challenger entered the race, giving Higdon an obstacle-free path to the seat when the new city council takes office in November.

"I am humbled and honored that I will be the Councilman for District 5 starting in November," Higdon said in a statement on social media. "I still plan on meeting and visiting as many of the citizens in District 5 to hear their concerns and encourage them to still vote in the City elections on August 26th."
The District 5 seat was last won by former council president Jeff Hogg, who resigned early last year after claiming that his actions in office had led to disruption in his family life, professional problems and even death threats.
The remaining council members voted to appoint Anwar Aiken to replace Hogg, and Aiken has held the seat since April 2024. He did not qualify to run for the office in August municipal elections.
Now the table is set for contested races for each of the other five elected offices in Northport - four city council seats and the mayor's office.
After qualifications ended, what had long been a single-candidate mayor's race now features four men running for the office.
Northport's municipal elections will be held on August 26, 2025. All city council seats and the mayor's office are up for election. Check out our just-launched coverage hub for those races here.
