The City of Tuscaloosa has made the decision to close its annual holiday event for the remainder of the season.

"Holidays on the River," hosted annually outside of the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, brought an outdoor ice skating rink to the city in addition to other holiday-themed activities. The event was temporarily postponed due to an increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 among employees of the City of Tuscaloosa; however, the decision was made to not re-open this holiday season.

"Ultimately the decision to close began with the City staff and a reduced number of available personnel," said Michelle McClinton Smart, Special Event Operations Manager for the City of Tuscaloosa. "We had to reallocate staff scheduled to work at [Holidays on the River] to help meet the City's needs."

Smart said it was a hard decision to cancel this year's event; however, she remains optimistic about what's in store for next year.

"Our goal is to bring it back in 2021 and 2022 and make it bigger and better than ever," Smart said.
