The heads of the largest governments in Tuscaloosa County drew a massive crowd to the Bryant Conference Center to address their triumphs and challenges during the State of the Community panel Tuesday.

The annual event is organized by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, hosted by the University of Alabama and presented by TTL, Inc. This year, the panel featured Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Probate Judge Rob Robertson and Northport Mayor John Hinton.

"Our biggest role as the Chamber is to convene, and there's no better example of that than to bring our three local governments together to talk about things that are impacting us as an entire community," said Chamber President and CEO Kyle South. "Things from public safety to road infrastructure to new Investments within each of those local governments and how that all creates a quality of life that allows us to attract and retain citizens here in West Alabama."

We'll have breakout coverage of different topics discussed Tuesday, including progress on recreational projects in Tuscaloosa and Northport, the fight against violent crime, the push to reform internet sales tax law and more.

The biggest takeaway, though, is that this is a time of almost unprecedented collaboration between not only the governments but also area organizations and nonprofits who serve the people of west Alabama daily.

"This yearly conversation allows members to see for themselves the collaboration that's always going on but can often happen behind closed doors," South said. "It's refreshing to hear the partnerships that are truly taking place."
