CENTREVILLE WATER UPDATE:

Centreville has lifted the precautionary boil water order. Notice of restoration of service was issued at 7:00 last night.

The order had been issued yesterday morning on the city's social media accounts around 10:00am Sunday after a faulty chlorine pump that disinfects the city's water supply created concern for consumption.

Officials in the Bibb County Seat now say that tap water is safe to use for consumption, cooking and daily routine. However, they are advising residents to flush their pipes by running cold water faucets for at least five minutes before use.

Crews worked Sunday to repair the pump. They then ran tests to make sure that chlorine disinfection levels had returned to normal.

Schools are scheduled to return to classes after the Thanksgiving break. Originally Bibb County High School and Centreville Middle School had been slated to be closed today due to the order but will now be open.

Because microorganisms can be found in the natural water supply to municipalities, water departments use chlorination as a method that can be used to disinfect water. It is used by utilities in tap water to kill germs and make it safe to drink.

Officials do not anticipate further issues with the water system.
