BREAKING NEWS:

Loss of chlorine disinfection in the City of Centreville has prompted authorities to issue a "Precautionary Boil Water Notice." Residents are advised to boil any water used for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth for at least one minute.

A statement from the city says, "We’re working to restore normal disinfection levels as quickly as possible and will let you know when the water is safe to drink without boiling."

Because microorganisms can be found in the natural water supply to municipalities, water departments use chlorination as a method that can be used to disinfect water. It is used by utilities in tap water to kill germs and make it safe to drink.

The noticed was issued around 10 a.m. this morning in a Facebook post. "Due to a loss of chlorine disinfection in our water system, we’re issuing a precautionary boil water notice for all customers. This means you should boil any water used for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth for at least one minute. We’re working to restore normal disinfection levels as quickly as possible and will let you know when the water is safe to drink without boiling."

Officials will inform residents when the water is safe to consume again.
